Fishing Flies  Robert Atkinson

A First Edition printed in 1991, it is beautifully illustrated with pictures and the history of all of the classic flies.

"The first written evidence of the pursuit of fly fishing is to be found in a book entitled Treatysse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle, published in England in 1496. However archaeology provides us with evidence that this method of catching fish was employed by many ancient hunter gatherer tribes; North American Indians for example are known to have fished using bone hooks adorned with fur and feathers. Today fly fishing is not often a means of obtaining food for the family, rather it is a very popular sport, but the fundamental principles remain unchanged. Using a fly is the most effective way to catch game fish and what is more, the bait can be used again and again.

In his introduction, fly fisherman and photographer, Robert Atkinson provides a concise history of the ancient craft of fly-tying. The rest of the book presents full colour photographs of a wide variety of flies complemented by explanatory text, special illustrated feature pages, and evocative location photographs.

'Fishing Flies - An Illustrated Album provides a fascinating introduction to the wide assortment of man-made creations devised to imitate and surpass the variety of nature's own creatures. This comprehensive book contains a wealth of annotated full colour photographs which chart the changing fashions, innovations and materials - natural and unnatural - employed throughout history by the fly fisherman in pursuit of his sport.
